Q: What comes to your mind when you think about the concept of sustainability?
In the context of RUNAWAY, sustainability refers to running as a practice which strengthens our physical and mental balance long term, because it aligns with our evolutionary DNA as humans, and does not harm our ecosystem. It is inclusive and bonding.
Q: RUNAWAY magazine gives a very special perspective to today's world. Can you tell us more?
The magazine may be called RUNAWAY, but we are not turning our back on our increasingly complex, technology-driven world. Rather, we are looking at it from the street. With our feet as our guides, we can connect to those on the road as well as our primal selves. We can be a little rebellious, or just search for the joy you won’t find in the digital world, on your sofa, or in your office.

Why did I want to interview the founders of Runaway Magazines? They are for sure a friendly, joyful couple but on top of it, they envisioned that running could be more than just the beauty of each single street you run across.
Q: What is it that connects running, sustainability and luxury to you?
The desire to look good is as much a part of our human expression as the desire to be physically active. Both are primal impulses and neither is limited by their direct utility. You can call this luxury. People may say that’s profane, but they forget that this is what has shaped the modern world.
As a related anecdote, Jan and I met whilst running down a dark street in the Lower East Side of New York. It was a cool, but beautiful night. Although he may not recall what I was wearing yesterday, he will never forget what I was wearing the night we met: yellow running leggings. They got his attention. And now we are married and have this little magazine business together. That is luxury.
